Forget the Labels – Concentrate on What Matters
Unity? We can’t even decide what to call ourselves! Can we be Messiah’s body?
Hebraic, Messianic, Hebrew Roots, ‘I just follow the Bible’, Melchizedek, Jewish Roots, Christian Roots or Hebrew Christian Torah Observant. What have I missed?
Let the peace of Christ rule in your hearts, to which indeed you were called in one body; and be thankful.
Are we any different than the 40,000 traditional Christian denominations? Do we get along any better than they do? Are our reactions to strife unique or just the same as anyone else.
Is Being His Body a Choice We Need to Make
It seems it might be a noble endeavor to strive to become Messiah’s body at the same time we are choosing and loving doing Torah. The things we argue over and break fellowship over are as trite and shallow as church hopping until you find the exact music you prefer.
Being the Body of Messiah here on Earth is no small task. It takes effort and choice and most of all death to our egos and flesh.
What are the criteria for functioning as the Messiah’s body together?
For just as we have many members in one body and all the members do not have the same function, so we, who are many, are one body in Christ, and individually members one of another.Romans 12:4-5
“…but speaking the truth in love, we are to grow up in all aspects into Him who is the head, even Christ, from whom the whole body, being fitted and held together by what every joint supplies, according to the proper working of each individual part, causes the growth of the body for the building up of itself in love.”Ephesians 4:15-16
Is all the splintering and ugliness really a winnowing away? Could be, though that seems a bit simplified and an easy out to continue agreeing with ourselves and indulging in the belief that we are not the problem. Logically, it is unlikely that everyone else is at fault – but we have it right!
Therefore, laying aside falsehood, SPEAK TRUTH EACH ONE of you WITH HIS NEIGHBOR, for we are members of one another.Ephesians 4:25
Don’t Grow Weary in Doing Good
Finding those with the same mind and heart set to worship in Spirit and Truth needs to be a matter of prayer and discernment. Becoming intentional in what it is that we are about, or in other words, whose will we desire and are willing to insist on.
Many of us are currently without a group to meet with weekly, due to geography and/or fellowship breaks. Moving forward, we must not grow weary in doing good. Additionally, we bring a fullness to the Scriptures that is much needed in today’s understanding.
Once you have crossed over and become Hebrew, Sunday church can be extremely frustrating to endure. Bouncing to another Hebraic group often requires longer travel than one would hope for Sabbath rest.
At The Messianic Torah Observer, Rod Thomas expounds upon the various types of Unity that should be happening in our walks.
His unity in spirit and in the Holy Spirit should in theory and in reality be our Faith Community’s badge of honor. It should also be the thing that draws people to us; to incite curiosity and desire to be affiliated with such a cohesive community.”Rod Thomas, A Call for Unity
Opening Your Doors with a Weightier Matters Mindset
Don’t give up on meeting together. However, as the movement grows and matures, we need to go about our gatherings more purposefully. Not so much the actual meetings themselves, but how we approach the overall idea of building a fellowship and making a choice to be Messiah’s body together.
Focus on Being Messiah’s Body – the Rest Will Work Itself Out
Accountability, structure, and leadership are important Biblical principles that fellowships which desire to be His and His alone need to put in place, or ideally start with.
As folks visit your group, they should understand from the first visit what your group is about, what your purpose and vision are. Once a person or family are no longer considered visitors but have transitioned into being regular attendees, they should be invited to make a commitment to the fellowship’s principles and intentions.
What Intentions and Purposes do You ask Regular Attendees to Agree to?
- To be His body together
- Agree to disagree on the non-weightier matters
- Follow Scriptural guidelines on any and all disagreements
- Allow each member to function and thrive in their gifting
- Agreement to not undermine, argue about or cause issues with the structure, leadership, and accountability already in place
- To function in humility with Spirit and Truth
Indeed, our focus as Messiah’s body is doing and maintaining the Weightier Matters. While there is no wrong with doing the non-weightier matters, as Yahshua stated, they must stay in the ‘of LESSER IMPORTANCE’ category.
Strife and hurt feelings, broken relationships and fellowships over calendar, pronunciation and other lesser matters need to be a thing of the past. Being The Body is a decision, much like marriage and not something that should be subject to our emotions.
YHVH is calling us to a maturity and to grace as we continue impacting the world with the Good News that is One Story from Genesis to Revelations.
