“Like a city that is broken into and without walls, is a man who has no control over his spirit.”Proverbs 25:28
Have you ever struggled with having no control over your spirit? We are all human, so a safe bet is that yes, we all have.
It is a scary disconcerting feeling, is it not?
In this verse, we are referred to an ancient city without any strong walls. What do you suppose would become of a city without walls? Perhaps it would be attacked, plundered, and left in ruins?
None of which any sane person would choose for their life. However, we frequently live our lives without protection. Without boundaries or any guard.
As people, when we are without self-control, we become like a city without walls. Lack of self-control leaves one unguarded and at risk – it’s essential protection for your life.
Healthy boundaries are to protect your life. That is the building of walls – or hedges.
As the ancient city needed boundaries, so your life requires hedges. A wise man builds walls around what he can do and not do, what he will allow his eyes to see, his body to partake of or abstain from, where he will enter or avoid entering.
Boundaries of action, hedges of association, fences of thought, and protections of relationships.
Don’t avoid the issue of self-control. Instead, build whatever hedges you need building. Once they are up, honor them and guard them.
Just as an ancient city needs walls, so do you. So do I.
