What is True Accountability and is it Biblical?

Messianic Man on Path Accountability the way of the weightier matters

The Way of the Weightier Matters includes True Biblical Accountability and the Hard Truth that it is a Matter of the Heart.

Encouragement, Inspiration, Prayer, Growth Assignments, Check-ins, Mutual Accountability? Bottom line? Real, true Biblical Accountability is a matter of the heart.

“So then, confess your sins to one another and pray for one another, so that you will be healed. The prayer of a good person has a powerful effect.”

James 5:16

True Accountability is Between Yah and You

Real true accountability is being responsible for ourselves. To God alone. Which includes following His word on the truths about relational interactions and commitments.

So then each of us will give an account of himself to God.

Romans 14:12

Relational Accountability is His Gift and Tool

A part of that true accountability is a relationship(s) that supports and provides comfort. We can use motivation from others who love us to withdraw from temptation, to point out where we are falling short and much more.

However, a genuine accountability relationship is contingent solely on what is in the heart and soul of each person. We each must be pursuing accountability with God and choosing the relational link as an aid in our ultimate responsibility to Him.

Without a doubt, trust must be present in any relationship that desires accountability. Also, genuine love, caring and the ability to listen non-judgementally are necessary components. In other words, mutual responsibility comes beside us in love, encouraging, believing and providing a helping hand.

Why do you see the speck that is in your brother’s eye, but do not notice the log that is in your own eye? Or how can you say to your brother, ‘Let me take the speck out of your eye,’ when there is the log in your own eye? You hypocrite, first take the log out of your own eye, and then you will see clearly to take the speck out of your brother’s eye.

Matthew 7:3-5
Without a heart for accountability, accountability is meaningless.

As believers, we should, of course, be continually growing and maturing in our faith and in our strengths, daily becoming who He made us be. However, what we often do, as we become more confident in our giftings is ignore that which unites every last one of us – our mutual sin nature.

True Accountability is Rooted in Our Heart’s Desire to be More Like Him

Relationships that intentionally choose to include or be based on accountability find a safe place to deal with our sin bents actively. A place where our struggle does not negate our gifting. The alliance becomes a home that includes mutual authenticity.

Brothers, if anyone is caught in any transgression, you who are spiritual should restore him in a spirit of gentleness. Keep watch on yourself, lest you too be tempted. Bear one another’s burdens, and so fulfill the law of Christ. For if anyone thinks he is something, when he is nothing, he deceives himself. But let each one test his own work, and then his reason to boast will be in himself alone and not in his neighbor. For each will have to bear his own load.

Galatins 6:1-5

So if and it is a pretty big if – real accountability between two or more people must include the desire to maintain genuine humility, acknowledging one’s own fallen nature and struggles. Besides for an accountability relationship to be successful, all parties must be ready for authenticity. Masks must come off, and defenses must purposely set aside.

Once all have reached a place of humility and desire for true accountability God can and will use these relationships in unusual life-changing ways.

Let the word of Christ dwell in you richly, teaching and admonishing one another in all wisdom, singing psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, with thankfulness in your hearts to God.

Colossians 3:16

So What Does True Accountability Look Like?

The Bible gives much clarity on how confiding to each other, praying for and encouraging each other is the business we are to be about.

  • Additionally, accountability can provide protection.
  • The friendship must have a foundation in love and devotion.
  • Grace and judgment also come into play.
  • Forgiveness, prayer, and humility are all the basis of an accountability friendship.
  • This relationship is a Yah-sent partner in spiritual warfare.
  • It is a friendship where sometimes you may give or receive a rebuke.
  • A person you will rejoice with and with whom we will weep with and for.
Real and true Biblical accountability is a gift and tool from Yah. Ponder with us.

Real Biblical Accountability is a heart choice first with your Creator and only second horizontally. It is a tool the Father is asking each of us to use. A gift He wants to give us.

What Obstacles Must be Overcome to Reach Mutual Accountability?

The most common obstacles to successful accountability are making it between you and your partner instead of between you and God firstmost. Additionally, pride and a lack of authenticity create a false partnership.
Accountability programs can be a blessing or a snare. If you are putting faith in the program, it’s not going to work. If it is your choice, with your desire to mature and walk closer to God – programs can be highly beneficial. However, if anyone chooses accountability to look righteous or godly, it is likely to cause more pain than not.

Biblical accountability, authenticity, and intentionality in our walk with YHVH are all needed in our daily lives and are the attributes we need to embrace. We are real with YHVH first and each other second. In fact, choosing this lifestyle is a choice for Yah. A choice to be held accountable, a willingness to look in the mirror and admit our flaws and sins. Not just a willingness but a sincere and genuine desire to become more like Him. Equally important is the decision to approach maturing in Him, in the way He has laid out in His word.

Accountability requires transparency.  It gives someone else permission to call us out … to challenge our limiting beliefs, to poke holes in our excuses that masquerade as explanations and to not let us give up when we are ready to quit.
